It is essential for healthy and restful sleep that the body can regenerate and rest optimally during the resting phase. This is only possible if the bed with its slatted frame, mattress and pillow provides ergonomically correct support.
Depending on the sleeping position, it must meet different requirements so that the spine adopts a straight and stretched position and muscles and joints relax.
A mattress for back sleepers therefore requires a suitable structure and an appropriate degree of firmness – conditions that not every model fulfills.
Back sleepers rest healthy, but only on the right bed
About two thirds of all people prefer to sleep in a lateral position, while back sleepers make up about 20 percent of the population.
From the point of view of physiotherapists and physicians, it would certainly be desirable to reverse this ratio. Sleeping in a supine position is considered to be the optimal posture to enable free breathing and to relieve the bone structure and muscles.
In addition, pressure on the internal organs is avoided. The reason why people who sleep on their back still suffer above-average pain, tension or loud snoring is almost always due to an incorrectly adjusted bed system.
The problem is that the market is dominated by bed accessories for side sleepers. Many manufacturers orient themselves almost exclusively towards this sleeping position and neglect other postures too much.
When sleeping on your side, hips and shoulders must be able to sink into the mattress so that the bed provides an anatomically correct position for the spine.
However, it is precisely these characteristics that contradict the optimal conditions for a back sleeper, as the pelvis and upper body are lower. As a result, the back forms a hollow back and the neck area is first bent forwards due to the stronger angle, the head is then bent back again.
Basically, this results in a sleeping position that offers almost perfect conditions for tension and joint stress. Normally, people sleep very calmly in the supine position, move very little and wake up in the position in which they fell asleep.
However, this only applies if the body is not fighting against external influences during the night.
If it instinctively tries to minimize the tension of the muscles and the permanent pressure on joints and bones, it is not uncommon for born back sleepers to develop into forced and correspondingly restless side sleepers.
How is a suitable mattress for back sleepers constructed?
The most important criteria for a mattress for back sleepers are that the pelvis – on which most of the weight rests – sinks in slightly, but the chest is supported by the surface.
Without additional bedding such as pillows, the head, back and legs should form a straight line, while the hips sink slightly to relax at night. It must be supported and must not sag.
If it sinks too deeply or not sufficiently, the spine, which is slightly curved forward, bends and is either compressed or stretched by the weight – in both cases the load prevents relaxation and leads to problems such as restless sleep or pain in the long term.
Why it is better to use a 7-zone mattress
Mattresses for sleeping in a supine position should therefore be neither too hard nor too soft and provide optimum support in the individual zones.
High point and area elasticity also has a favorable effect, as the weight presses down on the surface at individual points, but at the same time is distributed to its surroundings.
This combination results with a rounded and curved curve that corresponds to the natural course of a body and supports it without interruption.
Unfortunately, only a few manufacturers offer special mattresses for back sleepers with several zones in variable degrees of hardness, but many universal models with the classic 7-zone division are also suitable for this sleeping position.
The most important feature is that the shoulder area is not too soft. It should be noted that there is no official, general standard for the subdivision of a mattress – for example, in some companies zone 2 refers to the neck area, but in others it already refers to the shoulder area, while zone 5 stands for either the pelvis or the thighs.
Which material is best?
A suitable underlay for back sleepers is characterized more by its properties, lying zones and structure than by a special material.
